An Evening & Ride with Paul Smart...

Motorcycle Racer Paul Smart is a legend. Along with Mike Hailwood, one of only two British riders to have a Manufacturer name a production motorcycle in their honour – funnily enough, both by Ducati. Paul's win on a Ducati at the Imola 200 in 1972 arguably set the Italian marque on the road to future World Superbike and MotoGP success...

Paul's career spanned motorcycle racing's golden era; from 1963 to 1978 he raced Triumph, Kawasaki, Ducati and Suzuki machines. In the 70s he raced at Grand Prix level gaining 7 podiums from 10 starts. Most would say Imola in 72 was his finest hour but Paul believes that beating Phil Read at the Brands Hatch 'Hutchinson 100' race was a greater achievement.

A private man, you will not find many pictures or press interviews with Paul Smart, he tended to be overshadowed by Brother In Law, Barry Sheene. But to those who know him, Paul is a great personality, a committed motorcyclist, a mine of information on classic bikes - and full of racing anecdotes.

Now you can not only spend an exclusive evening in his company but also enjoy a ride-out with him on the glorious roads of the West Highlands of Scotland the next day!

Tuesday 17^th May:

*Check in from 14:00, relax in this former Highland shooting lodge

*Enjoy pre-dinner drinks with Paul followed by a 3 course meal

*After dinner, at the table and later in the bar, reminisce with Paul about his racing career

Wednesday 18^th May:

*Breakfast from 08:00

* Engines start at 09:00 for a morning ride led by Paul

* Return for lunch at 13:00 and then departure

Ledgowan was delighted to welcome the Scotland division of the Porsche club last week, they all enjoyed tours around the West Coast, albeit very wet days. The final 2010 Ledgowan arts, crafts and gifts fair of the year will be taking place on Saturday, 4 December, 2010 (11am to 4pm).

Ledgowan fairs have become popular events for both locals and visitors alike, offering wonderful quality arts, crafts, gifts and yummy food, all produced by talented, Highland businesses.

Everyone will be made welcome and are invited to make themselves comfortable, relax by one of the open fires, toast toes and enjoy the beautifully decorated Victorian rooms, and soak up the atmosphere of Christmas from a time gone by - before leaving, to return to the 21st century.

As well as shopping at the fair, the day out could include morning coffee, lunch, or afternoon tea, at the hotel, or all three!

Press Release: Otter evening supported by local businesses

On the 9 September, at the Ledgowan Lodge Hotel, Achnasheen, Paul and Grace Yoxon of the world famous, Skye based, International Otter Survival Fund (IOSF), will be giving a talk about otters and the work the charity undertakes (the latter includes reintroducing young abandoned, or injured, otters to the wild).

The IOSF was inspired by observing otters in their natural habitat. Because the otter lives on land and in the water and is at the peak of the food chain it is an ambassador species to a first class environment. IOSF was set up to protect and help the 13 species of otter worldwide through a combination of compassion and science. It supports projects to protect otters, which will also ensure that we have a healthy environment for all species, including our own. There are now believed to be around 8,000 otters spread across virtually every part of Scotland.

Otters live mainly on a diet of fish including eels, salmon and trout, but also often eat crabs, frogs and occasionally small mammals and birds. They live beside the sea or by fresh waters such as rivers, lochs and marshes - coastal otters must wash their fur regularly in fresh water to maintain its waterproofing quality. It was made illegal to kill otters in 1981. They are now fully protected by European legislation. They had previously been hunted for sport, their fur, and because they eat fish.

The evening in Achnasheen commences at 7.30pm, admission is by donation (all funds raised during the evening will go towards the upkeep of the baby otters at the IOSF), and during the evening there will also be a raffle of otter related items to further boost funds.

Paul Yoxon makes no charge for his talks - and the evening is being supported by the hotel by offering their function room free of any charge, local artist and author Bryan Islip (of Mellon Charles) has donated a signed print for the raffle, Jackie West Marketing, Achnasheen, has donated framed illustrations of otters (by Duncan Currie), and artist Duncan Currie of Broadford, Skye, has donated a set of illustrated otter cards, various other items have been promised from other members of the local business community.

Funds are urgently needed at the moment, since the beginning of the year IOSF have received 6 cubs which means they currently have 12 otters in care at the sanctuary and only 1 is close to release.

Normally they treat about 10-12 otters per year and would have about 6 in at any one time, so this sudden increase is totally unexpected. As a result the food bills have almost doubled - it costs about £1000 to rear an otter cub and therefore the costs for the current year are running at over £12,000 already. Otter cubs stay with their mothers for 12-15 months so the IOSF have to release the cubs at about the same age - if they are released too early they will not survive. This is why the food bills are so high.

It is hoped that the evening is well supported, and that everyone will be generous either by donations or by purchasing a raffle ticket (or both!) - no amount is too small to buy a fish for an otter.

Ledgowan offers something to suit all pockets - en-suite hotel accommodation, bunkhouse for walkers, and a campsite for tents, caravans or campervans. With the latter two also able to enjoy the facilities of the hotel, the bar, restaurant and lounge. And, we're open all day for lunch and evening meals in the bar or restaurant, as well as afternoon teas.

There are so many things to see up here - something for everyone, providing you accept that the weather is very changeable. You're likely to experience all four seasons in one day!

That said, we've beautiful (and clean) golden sandy beaches (Redpoint, for one), plenty of activities available for the active (such as hill walking and Munro bagging), wildlife watching - organised or do you own thing (if you want you can just sit in the hotel garden to catch a glimpse of red deer!), National Trust properties (Inverewe is just up the road). And, history in abundance (the Pictish trail - just one example) and lots of great events happening over the next few months (Highland Games). And for those in search of Game, stalking and fishing can be arranged for you.

If you haven't yet experienced the warmth of the welcome in the Highlands, and it's not a myth, do come and see us.

Here at Ledgowan we organise many events, and we think that you'll find this one appealing, especially if you're keen on wildlife.

On Wednesday, 9 September, at 7.30pm, Paul Yoxon will be giving a talk about Otters and the work he and his wife, Grace and their team, carry out within their Skye-based charity The International Otter Survival Fund

Paul has agreed to take time out from his busy schedule, to come along to Ledgowan to give us an insight into this beautiful and endangered creature.

Admission is by donation, and will go towards the upkeep of the baby otters which Paul and Grace nurture before release into the wild.

Plus the hotel will be running a raffle on the evening to help raise further funds for the IOSF. (We're told there's going to be an 'ottery' prize).

With winter now behind us (we hope!), we're making preparations for the season to start in earnest.

Already the surrounds are taking on a new perspective, although there's still a little snow on the higher ground. Oyster Catchers and Curlews have arrived to nest in the surrounding flat-land, and the spring flowers are beginning to give us that longed-for splash of colour. It's a great time to be here in the Highlands.

If you're looking for budget accommodation don't forget our Bunkhouse - sleeps 10 comfortably (2 bunks per room) and at £12.00 per person, per night, with full use of the hotel bar, restaurant and lounge, it's a really great deal. However, booking in advance is required, to avoid disappointment.

Plus, our campsite is open - we welcome tents, caravans or campervans. At £5 per person, per night, plus full use of the Bunkhouse facilities (shower/kitchen) you can afford to stay just that bit longer.

'Journey With Taste’ caters for a broad spectrum of entertainment events from the intimate close gathering of friends, visitors from both near and far, to corporate/business functions, with emphasis on an appreciation of Malt Scotch Whisky.

The event offers an experience of new tastes and flavours of Malt Scotch Whisky and food products that are made solely in Scotland. The event will be set in the warm, pleasant atmosphere of the Ledgowan Lodge Hotel, enabling individuals to share the; ‘Journey’ and be comfortable in close proximity to each other reflecting an ambience of comfort. What makes this product different from others on the market is that you will learn from your own tastes and experiences.

This ‘Journey’ will not be about what others think and say of Malt Scotch Whisky but about your feelings, thoughts and tastes. There are no ‘wrongs’ when taking this journey, as diverse and varying opinions may be offered by everyone taking part. The emphasis is for the participant to own and enjoy this experience as it must be about what is ‘right’ for them when nosing and tasting Malt Scotch Whisky. It will also give an opportunity to sample Scottish Fayre that is not always readily available in supermarkets. Journey With Taste’ introduces unique Scottish food products between the tasting of each Scotch Malt Whisky.

This serves two purposes, firstly to clean the palate before tasting the next Scotch Malt Whisky and secondly to give an insight to the fabulous range of food products available. Emphasis will be on the participant’s enjoyment, primarily of the Malt Scotch Whisky however the raising of awareness of the differing flavours of all Scottish Fayre throughout the Journey will also be encouraged. Everyone will have the opportunity to share and discuss his or her own individual experience with others.

A great day was had by all on 23 August at the second craft fair of the year, at the hotel.

Not only did the sun shine, but the visitors flowed and the exhibitors kept pretty busy all day.

Up here it's been mixed, but we've had more good days than the usual wet stuff which normally gets thrown at us...

We've been extremely busy with our usual mix of guests, plus some great cars have been stopping off on their Highland tours - do have a look at the photographs of these wonderful cars on this site.

Ledgowan was honoured to host a stop-over recently of three beautifully restored Rolls Royce's dating back to 1909 and 1912.

Angry residents of a Wester Ross village in the Highlands of Scotland have set up a campaign to protest against a National Trust for Scotland (NTS) decision to slash access hours and long-standing local access provisions to the world famous Inverewe Garden in Poolewe.

The garden, along with a generous endowment for its upkeep, was gifted to the NTS in 1953 by Mairi Sawyer, daughter of Osgood Mackenzie, whose vision created the garden over 100 years ago. His sheer audacity at creating a prolific garden on a barren and treeless peninsula on the north-west coast of Scotland, filling it with trees and shrubs collected from around the world, resulted in the creation of one of the most horticulturally important and famous international gardens.

Since Mairi Sawyer’s time the garden has been open throughout the year until sunset and local people have also enjoyed the privilege of a complimentary entry pass. But both local residents and visitors from further afield have been incensed by an NTS decision to close the garden for entry outside normal ‘visitor centre hours’ during the summer, and not to issue any new local entry passes, and are campaigning to persuade the NTS to restore the previous arrangements.

Campaign leader Tracy McLachlan said ‘the NTS has handled this decision very poorly. There has been no consultation, and the garden was closed without any announcement. Indeed the first that many people heard of it was when they tried to access the garden and found a ‘closed’ notice on the gate.’ She continued, ‘we feel that the NTS is being very short-sighted in its apparent ignorance of public opinion and is taking little notice of the potential loss of goodwill and income that this move will cause. The NTS claims that Inverewe is struggling financially, but campaigners say the way forward is to work with local people and NTS members rather than antagonise them in this way. This decision will surely result in nothing but a decrease in income and some very negative feeling towards the NTS, and we can’t see how they can possibly benefit by it’.

Local opposition to the move has been so strong that Poolewe Hall was packed with supporters at a campaign meeting held on May 21st. Since its launch last week, the campaign has also received numerous messages of support from NTS members, many of whom are prepared to cancel their membership in protest if the decision is not reversed.

The NTS has listed financial constraints and health and safety and insurance concerns among their reasons for the closure, but the campaigners believe these are spurious reasons.

Campaigners say that they would be delighted to meet senior representatives of the NTS to discuss possible ways forward that will benefit the NTS, the local community and visitors to the garden.

The bunkhouse has 6 rooms each sleeping two people - a bunkbed in each.

Ideal for walks in this impressive, unspoiled part of the
